10 tips for sunny days

In summer you should pay a lot of attention when staying outdoors for longer, otherwise you can quickly get a sunburn. Above all, it is important that you use enough sunscreen and do not spend too much time in the sun. But there are many more tips and tricks on how to protect yourself from the sun. With our 10 tips you will be spared a sunburn!

1) Get used to the sun slowly

Do not overdo it in the spring with the sunbathing: After all, your skin has hardly received any sun all winter and must first get used to the higher intensity of UV radiation. The self-protection of the skin builds up slowly, so you should protect yourself at the first sunbathing with light clothing and a sunscreen with a sufficiently high SPF.

If the skin regularly gets sun again, the so-called light calluses build up. This is a thickening of the corneal layer, through which the UV-B radiation can be better filtered. Nevertheless, you should definitely continue to use a sunscreen to protect your skin optimally from the sun. The protection by the light Schwiele corresponds namely only about SPF 5.

2) Use enough sunscreen

Do not use sunscreen when applying cream to the skin. Otherwise, the SPF indicated on the cream will not be achieved. On average, an adult needs about 36 grams of sunscreen to protect the whole body. That's about a serving of three tablespoons. Special care should be taken to creamy areas such as the ears, lips, nose, décolleté, neck, shoulders and the top of the foot.

In addition to sunscreen, proper clothing protects us from the sun. Dark garments offer better protection than bright ones. Especially in intense sunlight you should wear at least a T-shirt with short sleeves and a pair of shorts. For longer stays in the sun special textiles can be recommended, which have a particularly high UV protection.

3) Apply on time

Do not get creamed until you are already in the sun, but best before you go to the door. So you are directly protected when you go outdoors.

In addition, some sunscreens require a certain start-up time before they can effectively filter the sun's rays. Such creams with chemical filters should be applied well 30 minutes before sunbathing. But today there are also sunscreens that offer immediate protection.

4) Do not stay too long in the sun

The self-protection time of the skin indicates how long you can stay in the sun without sunscreen. It depends primarily on the skin type: Lighter types, for example, have a self-protection time of only ten minutes. For darker skin types, however, it can be more than half an hour.

The self-protection time can be extended by the use of sunscreen. How long you are protected can be determined by multiplying the skin's own protection time by the sun protection factor of your sunscreen. To be on the safe side, however, this time span should only be used to 2/3. On the same day then no further stays in the sun should be done.

5) Also cream in the shade

Although the sun's rays are lower in the shade than in the sun, they are by no means safely protected: around 50 percent of UV light hits the skin even in the shade. Therefore, the use of a sunscreen with a sufficiently high sun protection factor is also important here.

Not only in the shade, but also in cloudy skies, it is advisable to cream yourself carefully. Because a large part of the UV radiation manages to reach the earth despite the clouds. Without sunscreen, it can therefore easily come to a sunburn, especially in southern countries.

6) Pay attention to UV-A and UV-B protection

Your sunscreen should provide both UV-A and UV-B protection. Make sure that both are stated explicitly on the packaging.

UV-A light provides an instant, but short-term tan. Although the radiation does not cause any visible damage to the skin, it increases the risk of developing skin cancer just like UVB radiation. UV-B light provides a longer-lasting tan and build up a sunscreen. The radiation is also responsible for the development of a sunburn.

7) Avoid midday sun

During lunchtime, ie between 12 and 14 o'clock, better still between 11 and 15 o'clock, you should avoid the sun in the summer. In this time, the radiation is particularly intense - sometimes the sun is 150 times more intense than in the morning and in the evening. This can quickly lead to a sunburn. Instead, take advantage of the slightly weaker sun in the morning or late afternoon to sunbathe.

8) Extra protection at the water

If you are lying in the swimming pool, on the quarry pond or on the beach, you should apply extra cream of lotion to your skin. Because the water reflects the UV light and significantly amplifies the radiation.

Especially in the mountains, a particularly careful sun protection is necessary: ​​For every 1, 000 vertical meters, the UV radiation increases by up to ten percent.

9) Protect the head and eyes

If you stay longer in the sun, you should definitely wear a hat. As a result, you can not only prevent sunburn on the scalp, but also prevent further heat damage, such as a sunstroke.

With the sunglasses you should make sure that this actually protects the eyes from the UV radiation. Otherwise, the radiation can cause permanent damage to the horn and retina. Therefore, pay attention to details such as "100 percent UV", "UV-400" or "CE" when purchasing.

10) After creaming during sports

While sunbathing you should refresh the sunscreen about every 60 minutes. Because by swimming in the water, drying with a towel or sweating during sports, the protective effect of the sunscreen diminishes.

However, you will not be able to increase the protective effect by applying creaming. For example, you can not achieve a sun protection factor of 30 by rubbing yourself three times with an SPF 10 cream.
