Treat nausea in pregnancy

About 75 percent of all pregnant women suffer from morning sickness. In most women, the nausea is limited to the first three months of pregnancy. In extreme cases, however, the symptoms may persist throughout the entire nine months. Often, the nausea is accompanied by other symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting or diarrhea. We reveal what helps against nausea in pregnancy and which home remedies are particularly effective.

Causes of pregnancy sickness

Why many pregnant women get sick again and again, is not yet clear. However, pregnancy sickness is probably related to the pregnancy hormone HCG. Studies have shown that women who are often sick during pregnancy have a particularly high blood HCG concentration.

The HCG level peaks between the eighth and the tenth week of pregnancy - this explains why many women experience significantly less nausea after the third month.

When and how long does the nausea occur?

In general, it is very different when and how long pregnant women get sick. Some are bad only in the morning, others also suffer from complaints during the day and in the evening. For many women, the nausea starts from the fifth week of pregnancy and stops after the first three months. In some cases, the unpleasant symptoms may persist longer.

Frequently the symptoms are aggravated by hunger, fatigue and stress. Try to avoid these conditions during pregnancy as much as possible: eat enough, sleep well enough and always incorporate relaxation breaks into your daily routine. In addition, the symptoms may be stronger in a multiple pregnancy.

Pregnancy sickness is not a cause for concern

That women are often sick during pregnancy is no cause for concern: the baby is fine despite her symptoms. In fact, nausea during pregnancy is even considered a positive sign. For example, statistically speaking, women with pregnancy sickness experience fewer abortions.

If you are spared from nausea during pregnancy, you should not worry about it. After all, every body reacts differently to a pregnancy.

Dizziness and tiredness as accompanying symptoms

Nausea is usually not the only sign of pregnancy - it often comes at the beginning of fatigue and dizziness. To prevent dizziness, you should eat regularly and exercise properly. Also avoid rapid movements, such as getting up from the squat or bed. If the dizziness occurs mostly in the morning when you get up, you can prevent it with light morning exercises in bed.

If, besides nausea, you also have a headache or fever, you should call a doctor for safety's sake. In that case, other health problems may be behind your symptoms.

Nausea in pregnancy can be dangerous

For most women, the nausea during pregnancy is annoying but harmless. But if the symptoms are very severe, the pregnancy sickness can also have negative effects on the health of the mother and child.

An extreme form of pregnancy sickness is called hyperemesis gravidarum. It occurs when those affected vomit more often each day, eat little or nothing, and eat and lose weight.

Frequent surrendering can deprive the baby of important vitamins and minerals. Most of the increased loss can be compensated by a targeted intake of food and drink again. In severe cases, however, an intravenous care of pregnant women in the hospital may be necessary.

Home remedies for pregnancy sickness

In case of nausea in pregnancy you do not always have to resort to medicines - often the symptoms can be alleviated with simple home remedies:

  • Eat a snack in bed in the morning before getting up - for example, a few cookies or some fruit. Alternatively, try a lightly sweetened tea. Because in the morning, the nausea is often particularly pronounced due to the low blood sugar level.
  • Over the day, take small snacks over and over again - this leaves out the feeling of hunger, which usually exacerbates the nausea. Small snacks such as biscuits, nuts, crispbread or rusk are very suitable.
  • If vomiting occurs more often, always re-infuse the body with sufficient fluids after vomiting. Drink small sips of still water or tea. Even fruits such as melons or grapes, which have a high water content, are well suited.

Nausea during pregnancy can be triggered, among other things by certain strong odors. Cigarette smoke, coffee, perfume as well as greasy or spicy foods come into question as triggers. If you are sensitive to these odors, try to avoid them in the future.

Medicines for morning sickness

Afraid to harm her unborn child, many women do not want to take any medication during pregnancy. However, if the nausea can not be alleviated with home remedies, you should ask your doctor for suitable medication.

Frequently, pregnant women are prescribed medications with the active ingredient dimenhydrinate, an H1 antihistamine. In addition, supplements containing vitamin B6 can help with nausea. For very severe complaints, the administration of other drugs is possible. Let yourself be advised by your doctor.

Homeopathy in pregnancy

Like pharmaceutical drugs, homeopathic remedies should only be given in pregnancy after consultation with a doctor, pharmacist or midwife. Some remedies can cause premature labor. Suitable substances include:

  • Arsenicum album
  • ipecac
  • Nux vomica
  • Pulsatilla pratensis.

Relieve morning sickness with acupuncture

Acupuncture is a branch of traditional Chinese medicine. During treatment, thin needles are pricked into certain points of the body. This is intended to restore a disturbed energy flow. More and more midwives are masters of this art - just ask your midwife.

The fact that acupuncture actually helps against morning sickness, has not yet been scientifically proven. However, many women report that their acupuncture symptoms have improved significantly. If you suffer from nausea more often, you should simply try out whether or not the procedure will work for you.
