Dill has numerous healing abilities

There are many myths surrounding the spice plant dill: a bundle of dill under the pillow should help against nightmares, while it should be attached to the door to keep away evil witches. Dill is used primarily for seasoning food and especially for seasoning cucumbers. Therefore, this spice plant is often referred to as cucumber herb, a name that she shares with the borage. As a spice, both the leaves and the fruits of the dill can be used. The leaves can be harvested from June to July, the fruits from August to September.

Dill contains valuable ingredients

Dill has a slightly sweetish taste, with the fresh herb tasting sweeter than the dried fruit. 100 grams of dried dill contains on average 5.5 grams of water, 4 grams of fat, 20 grams of protein, 57 grams of carbohydrates and 12 grams of crude fiber. Of minerals in the dill are mainly calcium, potassium and sodium.

Crucial for use as a spice, however, is the content of essential oils: a total of 100 grams contain between 0.1 and 0.35 grams of essential oils. In the leaves, their proportion is between two and four percent, in the fruits it is even higher with eight percent. In the oil of the fruits, carvone and limonene are the main components, while in the oil of the leaves one can still find phellandren and other monoterpenes.

Dill with healing effect

Dill are said to have numerous healing effects. So allegedly already rubbed in ancient Rome, the gladiators with dill oil to prevent their wounds lit. Today Dill is used as a remedy for loss of appetite and insomnia, but also for stomach problems, bloating and menstrual cramps. Stomach problems are easiest to relieve with a dill tea.

For the tea, the crushed fruits of the dill are used. Add five grams to 100 milliliters of hot water and then infuse for five to ten minutes. Against sleep problems, however, should not help tea, but a glass of dill wine. For the production of the dill wine, a glass of white wine is heated and then poured over a teaspoon of dill seed. Let the wine soak for a few minutes and then drain. Enjoy the dill wine in small sips.

It is also recommended to season with dill in addition to mothers in lactation, as dill has a milk-promoting effect.

Spicy recipes with dill

Dill, along with other herbs such as thyme, basil, rosemary, marjoram and tarragon, is standard in every kitchen. When cooking, it is mainly used as a spice for pickled or fresh cucumbers and salads. He is also often used for seasoning sauces. You can easily prepare dill sauces yourself, for example with this recipe for a delicious honey-mustard-dill-sauce. To do this, mix eight tablespoons of honey, one tablespoon of vinegar and four tablespoons of mustard.

Then add 100 milliliters of oil to the sauce. Chop the dill and add to the sauce, then season with salt and pepper. In addition, dill is also used in the preparation of fish and meat. The dill tips are usually used for seasoning, but for fish dishes the leaves are preferred.

Dill is a spice plant and belongs to the family of Umbelliferae. The plant is native to the Middle East but is now cultivated all over the world. Already in ancient Greece and ancient Rome, the spice plant was used. Dill can be grown both outdoors and in the greenhouse. Perfectly suitable for cultivation are moist, warm soils with a high proportion of humus.

For the cultivation of dill but you do not necessarily need a garden. You can also grow the spice in a pot in the kitchen or on the balcony. If dill is grown in the home, the plant should have its location by the window.
